How do I request a copy of my personal data?
Learn how to request a copy of your personal data here.
How can I access and/or update my information?
You can access and edit most of your basic account information right in our apps. You can also use Download My Data to obtain a copy of information that isn’t available in our apps in a portable format, so you can move it or store it wherever you want. Because your privacy is important to us, we may ask you to verify your identity or provide additional information before we let you access or update your personal information. We may reject your request to access or update your personal information for a number of reasons, including, for example, that the request risks the privacy of other users or is unlawful.
Check out our Support Page to learn more.
What information does Snap collect or infer about me?
For an up to date overview of the information we collect, please see the section “Information We Collect” of our Privacy Policy.
Does Snapchat share my data with third parties?
Yes, for an up to date overview see the section “How We Share Information” in our Privacy Policy.
Who is my information shared with?
When we share information, it’s usually because you ask us to — like when you want to add a Snap to Our Story or send a Chat to a friend. Some of your information, like your username and Snapcode, is visible to the public by default. We also share information within the Snap family of companies, with service providers and business partners that help us provide our services, and when we think it’s required by law or needed to avert a threat of imminent harm to any person.
Check out our Privacy Policy for more details.
What are the purposes of processing my personal data?
The most up to date overview of the purposes for processing can be found in the section “How We Use Information” in our Privacy Policy, and we provide specific product examples and guidance in our Privacy Center, take a look!
Where is my data stored?
When you send Snap your data, you are sending it directly to Snapchat’s servers, including those located in the United States.
If we transfer the personal data you send us to somewhere other than the country or region where you live (including for storage purposes), we make sure an adequate transfer protection is in place if required by law. Snap usually provides this protection for users in the European Economic Area (EEA), UK, Switzerland and other jurisdictions that have cross-border data transfer requirements by complying with the EU-US Data Privacy Framework (EU-US DPF), the UK Extension to the EU-US DPF, and the Swiss-US Data Privacy Framework (Swiss-US DPF) as set forth by the US Department of Commerce and/or relying on locally accepted contractual clauses, such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and UK International Data Transfer Agreement. For detailed information about how long we store different types of content, check out our Privacy Policy and Support Site.
How is my information protected?
It’s hard to have a sense of privacy if you don’t feel safe and secure too. That’s why we provide you with features like Login Verification (a form of two-factor authentication) to secure your account, and why we take considerable efforts to secure our own infrastructure. Check out Privacy by Product for more details.
How long will Snapchat keep or retain my data?
Snap has short retention periods for most data we collect. You can read more about Snap’s retention practices in the section "How Long We Keep Your Information" of our Privacy Policy, as well as in the various product specific Support Site or your Download My Data package.
How can I delete my Snapchat account?
We don’t want you to leave Snapchat, but we can’t stop you. That’s why we have made it easy for you to delete your account. Just follow the steps described here.
Please Note: Deleting your account will also revoke your access to any other Snap account entities.
How can I object to the processing of my information?
If you’re based in the EEA, UK, Switzerland, or other jurisdictions with a similar right, you have the right to object to our use of your information. With many types of data, we’ve provided you with the ability to simply delete it if you don’t want us processing it anymore. For other types of data, we’ve given you the ability to stop the use of your data by disabling the feature altogether. You can do these things in the app.
If there are other types of information you don’t agree with us processing, you can contact us by completing this form.
How can I file a complaint with a data protection authority?
If you’re based in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland, you can always file a complaint with the supervisory authority in your Member State. For example, if you’re based in the UK you can file a complaint with the Information Commissioner’s Office. You may have similar rights if you live in other jurisdictions, depending on the applicable privacy laws and the regulatory body that is responsible for enforcement.
How can I exercise my privacy rights?
You may have specific privacy rights in your state or region. For example, in the United States, residents of California and other states have specific privacy rights. Snapchatters in the European Economic Area (EEA), the UK, Brazil, the Republic of Korea, and other jurisdictions also have specific rights. We keep an up-to-date overview of state and region specific disclosures here.
The information above should provide you with the ability to exercise your right to access, portability, correction, and deletion and allow you to object to processing. If the above information does not resolve your request or you’d like to exercise any rights not provided for here, you can submit a request through this form.
Does Snapchat collect or process sensitive personal information? How can I make a request to limit under the CPRA?
Yes, we collect some information that is considered sensitive under U.S. state privacy laws. For an up to date overview of the California information we collect, please take a look at our U.S. State Privacy Notice.
If you live in California you have the right to request that Snap limit the use and disclosure of your sensitive personal information (like precise location information). You have the ability to turn on precise location data sharing in your Snapchat app and in your device’s settings. However, if you would like to share precise location for certain app features (like the Snap Map), but not others (like precise location-based advertisements) you can do so in your Snapchat app by following the instructions here.
How can I opt out of targeted advertising?
In some states you also have the right to opt-out of targeted advertising. We provide all of our users the ability to do so by adjusting your in-app advertising preferences to turn off activity-based ads as described here.
My privacy rights request was denied, how can I appeal?
Residents in certain US states have the right to appeal a denial of a privacy rights request. In the event we deny your request, you have the right to appeal that decision. We will provide you with the necessary information to submit an appeal at that time. Alternatively, you can appeal a decision by completing this form. Please note that you may not submit an appeal (and Snap will not respond to an appeal) regarding decisions by Snap other than a decision to reject your right to: (i) know the data Snap processes about you, (ii) access your data, (iii) download your data, or (iv) delete your data.
