When is an account considered compromised or "hacked"?
A Snapchat account that has been accessed by someone who isn’t authorized to use it is considered compromised (or "hacked"). If you suspect your account has been compromised, you should immediately change your password and secure your account. Please see below for more information.
How can I tell if my account is compromised or "hacked"?
Your Snapchat account may be compromised or hacked if you notice suspicious behavior such as:
- You receive an email alert or in-app notification from Snapchat that someone logged into your account from a location, IP address, or device you do not recognize
- You observe a session or device you do not recognize in Session Management in Settings (if you do, make sure to terminate that session)
- The mobile number or email address associated with your Snapchat account was changed without your consent
- Your display name is different
- Two-factor authentication was added by someone else
- Spam is being sent from your account
- Your friends report suspicious friending or messages from your account
- Having to continually login to the app
- New contacts or friends being added without your permission
- Content posted to your Story or Spotlight you did not post
- You are contacted off-Snapchat about your Snap account, with details only you know
- You receive a notification about an export of your data (via Download My Data) you did not initiate
What should I do if I think my account is compromised or "hacked"?
If you think your account has been compromised by an unauthorized user, please…
- Change your password to regain control of your account. You can request a password reset link sent by SMS or email, if you need one.
- Make sure the correct email address and mobile number are associated with your account in Snapchat Settings.
If you can’t get back into your account by changing your password, please contact Support here.
Note: If you contact us, please share an email address that you have access to. This is so you can receive replies from Snapchat Support.
Please remember never to share your password or My Eyes Only passcode with anyone — not even us! A Snapchat representative will never ask you for that information and we don’t need it to help you.
