Topic Chats are large, public group chats tied to a specific topic, creator, or place. They may look like other group chats, but they’re public and work a bit differently.
How do I find and join a Topic Chat?
To join a Topic chat, look for the ‘Topics’ shortcut on the top of the Chat feed. Or, as an alternative, you can also find the option to ‘Join the Chat’ on Topic pages in Search, Spotlight, or Discover. When you see a Topic that interests you, tap ‘Join the Chat’ to jump in! Remember to keep the conversation respectful and on topic.
How do I interact with a Topic Chat?
- Send text and emojis
- To delete a message, press and hold on it, then tap ‘Delete’
- You can leave any time without sending a ‘left the group’ status message

How do I mute a Topic Chat?
If you want fewer notifications from a Topic Chat, you can mute it by following these steps:
- Open the Topic Chat
- Tap the three-dot menu icon at the top right
- Toggle on ‘Mute Notifications’
- This will mute chat notifications from that Topic Chat
How do I share a Topic Chat with friends?
You can share an invite link to a Topic Chat by tapping the three dots icon and then tapping ‘Invite Friends’.
You can also share a specific message in a Topic Chat by pressing and holding on the message and tapping ‘Share’. If you send the message to a Snapchat friend or group chat, the recipients can join the Topic Chat by tapping the ‘Join the Chat’ button.
Can my friends see that I joined a Topic Chat?
Your friends can see Topic Chats you have joined on your profile, and you can see the Topic Chats they have joined on their profile. Topic Chats on profile are only visible to friends. There are a few additional places where we may show friend activity from the Topic Chat, including the Chat Feed, the Topic Page, and the Topic Chat Feed.
Who can see what I say in a Topic Chat?
- Messages are always public.
- Messages stay viewable in the chat, but you can delete your messages at any time.
- Your Snapchat display name shows up with the messages you send.
- Your username is not displayed in the chat, and other members cannot add you as a friend directly from the Topic Chat. Topic Chats are public, so do not treat your participation as anonymous.
How do I leave a Topic Chat?
You can leave a Topic Chat any time by tapping on the three-dot menu, and then selecting ‘Leave Silently’. Leaving a Topic Chat will not send a ‘left the group’ status message to the Topic Chat.
When you leave a Topic Chat, the messages you sent to it will not be cleared unless you delete them.
How do I report a Topic Chat?
You can report messages in a Topic Chat by pressing and holding on the message, then tapping “Report”.
