What happens when I mute someone on Snapchat?
Muting someone on Snapchat is a simple way to control what you see without completely cutting off contact. Unlike blocking, muting doesn’t stop the other person from sending you Snaps or Chats.
When you mute a friend, their Stories won’t automatically appear at the top of your Stories feed. You can still choose to view them if you want to, but you won’t get notifications or see them highlighted. This helps you focus on the content you actually want to see, without alerting the other person that anything has changed.
If you mute someone’s Chat notifications, you’ll still receive their Snaps and Chats — we won’t send you a push notification. This can be helpful if you want to keep your feed quiet without removing or blocking anyone.
Muting can also apply to Group Chats. If you mute a Group, you’ll stay in the conversation and continue to receive messages, but you won’t get notified each time someone sends a new Snap or message. You can always check in on the Group whenever you like, and you’ll still have access to all messages sent while it was muted.
Importantly, muting is private. The person you mute won’t be notified, and they’ll still be able to view your Stories and send you Snaps or Chats as usual. From their perspective, nothing changes — muting only affects what you see and hear.
If you ever want to unmute someone, you can easily do so by opening their profile, tapping the three dots in the top-right corner, selecting ‘Story Settings’ or ‘Message Notifications,’ and adjusting your preferences.
Muting gives you control over your Snapchat experience — without needing to block, remove, or explain your choices to anyone.
