What happens when I block someone on Snapchat?
Blocking someone on Snapchat gives you control over who can contact or interact with you on the app. When you block a user, you’re essentially cutting off all direct communication between you and that person.
Once blocked, that person can’t send you Snaps or Chats, and they’ll no longer see your Stories or Charms. Your Snap Map location also becomes hidden from them — even if you were previously sharing it. From your perspective, their display name will disappear from your Friends Feed, and any active one-on-one conversations will no longer be visible. If you decide to unblock them later, your old chat history will still be available.
If you and the blocked person share a Group Chat, blocking them doesn’t remove you from that Group. You’ll still be able to see any messages they send to that Group, but they won’t be able to message you privately or add you to new groups. If you do not want to see their messages, you can always choose to leave the Group.
Blocking also affects visibility across the rest of Snapchat. You won’t receive Snaps, Chats, or Stories from the blocked account, and they won’t appear in your Search results, Best Friends list, or Quick Add suggestions. The person you’ve blocked won’t get a notification about it, but they might realize they’ve been blocked if they notice they can no longer view your profile or contact you.
It’s worth knowing the difference between blocking and removing a friend. Blocking someone completely prevents them from interacting with you in any way. Removing a friend, on the other hand, simply takes them off your Friends list — they may still see any public content you share, depending on your privacy settings.
To block someone, go to your Friends Feed, tap and hold on their display name, select ‘Manage Friendship,’ and then choose ‘Block.’ You can unblock them at any time from your settings if you change your mind.
If you ever feel uncomfortable or think someone is violating Snapchat’s rules, you can also report the account or a specific Snap directly from the app or via web form.
