When a Snapchat account has been compromised (also known as “hacked”) it means that it’s been accessed by someone who isn’t authorised to use it.
When reaching out to us, be sure to include an email address that you have access to so that you can receive a response from support. We will also request additional information to verify your identity, such as your username, when you lost access to your account, etc., but remember never to share your password or My Eyes Only passcode with anyone — not even us! A Snapchat representative will never ask you for them and we don’t need them to help you.
How to Know if Your Account May Be Compromised or Hacked
Your Snapchat account may be compromised or hacked if you notice suspicious behaviour such as:
- Spam sent from your account
- An alert that someone logged in to your account from a different location, IP address or device
- Having to continually re-log in to the app
- New contacts being added to your list without your permission
- The mobile number or email address associated with your Snapchat account being changed without your consent

How to Keep Your Account Secure
Once you’ve regained access to your Snapchat account, try some of these tips to help keep it secure.
Choose a Strong Password
Using a strong password helps keep your account safe. A strong password is unique, long and hard to guess.
Don’t use the same password for Snapchat and other services. Consider using a password manager to keep track of the unique passwords for all of your different accounts.
Snapchat requires that passwords be eight characters long, but longer passwords are better (as long as they are still unique!). Short phrases or sentences are good ways to make passwords long and unique while still being memorable.
Finally, make your password hard to guess: very common passwords based on personal characteristics like your birthday or the name of your pets are easy to guess. Passwords like "123456" or "password" are extremely popular and easy to guess as well. Avoid these very common, guessable passwords.
Verify your email and mobile number
Verify that the email address and mobile number associated with your account are accurate in Snapchat settings. This will help verify that your account belongs to you in case you ever lose access to it. Learn more about how Snap may use your phone number here.
Set up two-factor authentication
We encourage you to activate two-factor authentication, also known as login verification. This is an optional feature that keeps your Snapchat account more secure 🔐
Important ⚠️ Never give your Snapchat account details to an unofficial website, as it could compromise your account and information. Some phishing websites may look very similar to the official Snapchat page. If you need to manage your account settings, please do so through the official app or by logging in to the official Snapchat page.
Forget unrecognised linked devices
When you forget a linked device, you will be logged out on that device and any new log-in will require two-factor authentication, if you have it enabled.
