What restrictions apply to using Snapchat in Florida?
Due to Florida law, if you are under 14 years old, you are not able to use Snapchat. If you are 14 or 15 years old, you will need consent from a parent or guardian to either retain access to your Snapchat account or create a new one.
Though the impact of these changes can feel disappointing in situations like this one, the changes are the result of an evolving legal and regulatory landscape that unfortunately impacts your experience. For more information on the laws prompting this change, please see here.
What will happen to my Snapchat account if I’m 13 years old?
If you are 13 years old, your account will be locked. Once your account is locked…
- You will not be able to maintain your Snapchat account or create a new one until you turn 14.
- We encourage you to download your data as soon as possible. You will be given 90 days to download your data from the time your account is locked, and then your data (including Memories) will be deleted.
- If you have subscriptions for Snapchat+ or Memories+, we suggest you cancel them in the App Store or Play Store to prevent any billing issues.
- After your account is locked, it will be preserved in a locked state for 90 days. After 90 days, your account will be deactivated.
- If you have Streaks with friends, these cannot be preserved while your account is locked.
What should I do when I turn 14?
If you turn 14 within the 90-day period after your account is locked, you can log back into your account on your birthday. If you turn 14 after your account has been deactivated, you’ll need to create a new Snapchat account.
Once you log back in or sign up for a new account, you should see a prompt in the app to verify your age. Once your parent or guardian successfully verifies your age, you will need to get consent from them in order for your account to be reinstated. See below for more information on age verification with parental consent.
How can I verify my age if I’m 14 or 15 years old?
If you are 14 or 15 years old, a parent or guardian needs to give their consent and verify your age in order for you to use Snapchat. Make sure you are logged in to the app. You should see a prompt to verify your age.
Tap ‘Verify with Parent’ to begin the process. Enter your parent or guardian’s email address. Our third-party provider, k-ID, will send a link to your parent or guardian to verify their own age and confirm your birth date. Contact or other information provided for this method will only be used to contact your parent or guardian and verify your age.

How can I verify my age if I’m 16 years old or older?
If you are 16 years old or older, you can verify your age to secure access to your Snapchat account. Make sure you are logged in to the app. You should see a prompt to verify your age.
Tap ‘Verify Your Age’ to begin the process. Depending on service availability and your age, you should see some or all of the following options:
- Photo ID: You can scan your government-issued photo identification and k-ID will validate your ID document and age. The documents you submit will only be used to verify your age. Please note birth certificates are not supported.
- Verify with Parent: Enter your parent or guardian’s email address. k-ID will send a link to your parent or guardian to verify their own age and confirm your birth date. Contact and other information provided for this method will only be used to contact your parent or guardian and verify your age.
- Facial Scan: You can take a selfie and k-ID will estimate an age range.
- AgeKeys: AgeKeys are tokens you receive after verifying your age through k-ID that are stored locally to your device. If you already have an AgeKey, you can use it to maintain your access to Snapchat without additional age verification steps. Otherwise, once you successfully verify your age using one of the eligible AgeKey methods, k-ID will issue you an AgeKey token that you can use across Snapchat and other participating services.

Can I change my birthday if I had the wrong birthday set?
Please be sure to select the correct birthday if you are attempting to verify your age in-app. If you’re under 18 according to your current birthday in Snapchat, you can’t change your birthday. You can also only change your birthday a limited number of times if you’re over 18.
Where do I find the option to verify my age?
To verify your age using any method, including parental consent, follow these steps:
- Restart the Snapchat app
- Log in to your locked account
- Follow prompts on the lock notice screen to be redirected to your options for verification
If you’re still having issues, please make sure your Snapchat app is updated to the latest version.
What if I tried to verify my age, but I think the result was not accurate?
If you think the age verification method you tried didn’t provide correct results, you can try again, or ask your parent or guardian for help. If you still have issues with verifying your age, please see below for more information about support options.
How is my location determined?
Each time you log in to the Snapchat app, we use information we collect about you to determine your geographic location, including what state you access Snapchat from. If you’re not a resident of Florida, these laws will not apply to you or your account.
If I move out of Florida, how do I correct my location?
If you’re 13-15 years old and you’ve moved out of Florida, you may be able to unlock your account in your new home. Follow the steps below to check your account status:
- Restart the Snapchat app
- Try logging in
- If you’re eligible to use Snapchat in your new location, you’ll see a message saying your access has been reinstated, and you should be able to log in to your account.
- If you still can’t access your account, we were not able to detect a location change. If you think this was a mistake, you can try again. Make sure you are using a device you’ve previously used with Snapchat, and that you avoid using a VPN, which can skew our location determination.
