Add Friends from Your Contacts
You can add friends from the contacts in your phone or other device. If they don’t have a Snapchat account, you can invite them to create one.
To add friends from your device’s contact list…
- Tap the Profile icon at the top to go to your Profile
- Tap ‘Find friends on Snapchat’
- Go to the Settings on your device
- Select the access level you prefer (for example on iOS, Full Access or Limited Access)
- Tap ‘+ Add’ to add them as a friend!
- Contact names, hashed phone numbers, and email addresses
- Time last updated (e.g., 2 days ago)
- If the contact has a photo
- Please Note: We don’t upload the photo itself
- If the contact has a saved date (e.g., a birthday or anniversary)
- Please Note: We don’t upload the date itself
- If the contact is starred or is on your favorites list
- If the contact has a social media profile link
- Please Note: We don’t upload the social media link itself
- The contact type (Home, Mobile, Work, etc.)
You can see which data has been uploaded about your contacts in Settings. Just tap 'Contacts' under 'Additional Services,' then 'See Contacts Shared With Snapchat' to check it out!
Please Note: You can also remove your shared contacts from Snapchat by tapping 'Remove Synced Contacts From Snapchat,' or by going to 'Privacy Controls' in Settings, and tapping 'Clear Data' and then 'Clear Contact Data.' Importantly, disabling or adjusting your device-level permission to limit sharing contacts data with Snapchat may not remove previously shared contacts from Snapchat, which can always be done via in-app settings. We may continue to use your stored contacts to improve your app experience unless you tell us not to by deleting them from Snapchat.
Add Friends from Search
You can search by a friend’s name or username to add them.
To add friends using Search…
- Tap the magnifying glass icon at the top of the screen
- Type in a friend’s name or username
- Tap ‘+ Add’ to add them as a friend!
Add Friends Using Find Friends
Find Friends may appear in your Chat screen, the Add Friends screen, or when you use Search. Tap 'Add' or 'Accept' to add a new friend, or tap X to hide that Snapchatter.
Friend recommendations in Find Friends are based on factors such as age, location, existing friends, existing followers, reputation and behavior on Snapchat.
For more info on Find Friends and its protections, see here.
Pro Tip: Even if you don’t upload your contacts to Snapchat, or you delete your previously uploaded contacts, you may still see friends in Find Friends for other reasons, such as if you’re in other Snapchatters’ contacts.
Please Note: Your screen may look different depending on your device.
Add Friends by Mention
If you view a Story that has a Snapchatter Mentioned in it, you can add that Snapchatter!
To add a friend from a Mention…
- View the Story that the Snapchatter is Mentioned in
- Swipe up on the featured Snap

Add Friends by Subscribing to Public Profiles

To ignore a Snapchatter…
