What happens after I report abuse or illegal content on Snapchat?
When you submit a report in the Snapchat app, the reported content or account is reviewed for violations of our policies, which can include violations of Snapchat’s Community Guidelines, Content Guidelines for Recommendation Eligibility, and/or Terms of Service.
If we determine that the content or account violates our rules, we will take appropriate action under our policies, which may include removing the content or restricting the account. Please see our Moderation explainer for more information.
If content is removed for violating our rules, the account holder may be notified. However, we do not share your identity or any details about who submitted the report with the person reported.
Not all reported content violates our rules. If we find that the reported content does not violate our policies, including the Community Guidelines, Content Guidelines for Recommendation Eligibility, or Terms of Service, it will remain on Snapchat.
I'm a resident of the European Union, and I want to report illegal content under the Digital Services Act
If you see content or an account on Snapchat that you believe violates our policies, including our Community Guidelines, Content Guidelines for Recommendation Eligibility, or Terms of Service, we recommend using Snapchat’s in-app reporting tools as described above. Reporting in-app is the fastest and most effective way to alert our safety teams. We recommend this method because our Community Guidelines and Content Guidelines for Recommendation Eligibility set a high bar for keeping Snapchat safe and reporting in-app allows us to quickly identify the reported content.
If you instead wish to report content because you believe it is illegal under applicable law(s) in the European Union, you may submit a report through our online form under Article 16 of the Digital Services Act by clicking here.
You can also access this form through the Snapchat app by pressing and holding on the content you want to report, tapping “Report Snap” or “Report Ad,” and selecting “Other illegal content” (or “Illegal content”). You will be shown a submission form (similar to Snapchat’s typical in-app reporting form). After you tap “Next” on the form, you will be directed to an online form in your Snapchat web browser. When accessed this way, the content ID should automatically be included in your submission, but we’d recommend copying it to your clipboard just in case. We recommend accessing the form through the app for this reason, as providing the content ID will allow us to more quickly locate and assess the reported content. Without it, we may not be able to identify and take action on the content you are viewing.
This form may also be used to report ads that you believe are illegal under applicable law(s) in the European Union. To report an ad under Article 16 of the Digital Services Act, access the form by clicking here and provide a detailed description of the ad, including any information that will help us identify it (such as the advertiser’s name, the product or service promoted, and when and where you saw it) and why you believe it to be illegal/harmful. Providing sufficient detail will help us locate and assess the advertisement.
Only submissions made through this online form will be treated as notices under Article 16 of the E.U. Digital Services Act. When we receive a notice through this form, we will first assess the reported content or account under our Community Guidelines. If we determine that the content or account violates our Community Guidelines, we will take action in accordance with our policies. Please see our Moderation explainer for more information.
If we do not identify a violation of our Community Guidelines, and we are able to locate the reported content and the violation alleged is sufficiently clear, we will then assess whether the content may be illegal under applicable law.
In accordance with the Digital Services Act, we will acknowledge receipt of your notice and inform you of our decision.
I'm a resident of the United Kingdom, and I want to report illegal content or content harmful to children under the Online Safety Act
Additionally, our Community Guidelines address categories of content identified as illegal under the Online Safety Act, including content defined by Ofcom as harmful to children.
If you instead wish to report content because you believe it is illegal under UK law, or harmful to children, you may submit a report under the Online Safety Act, by clicking here.
You can also access this form through the Snapchat app by pressing and holding on the content you want to report, tapping “Report Snap,” and selecting “Other illegal content.” You will be shown a submission form (similar to Snapchat’s typical in-app reporting form). After you tap “Next” on the form, you will be directed to an online form in your Snapchat web browser. You will then need to select between “Illegal content” and “Content harmful to children” to let us know the type of report you are making.
When accessed through the Snapchat app, the content ID should automatically be included in your submission, but we’d recommend copying it to your clipboard just in case. We recommend accessing the form through the app for this reason, as providing the content ID will allow us to quickly locate and assess the reported content. Without it, we may not be able to identify and take action on the content you are viewing.
This form may also be used to report advertisements that you believe are illegal in the UK or contain content harmful to children. To report an ad under the Online Safety Act, access the form by clicking here and provide a detailed description of the ad, including any information that will help us identify it (such as the advertiser’s name, the product or service promoted, and when and where you saw it) and why you believe it to be illegal/harmful. Providing sufficient detail will help us locate and assess the advertisement.
Only submissions made through this online form will be treated as reports under the Online Safety Act.
When we receive a report through this form, we will first assess the reported content or account under our Community Guidelines. If we determine that the content or account violates our Community Guidelines, we will take action in accordance with our policies. Please see our Moderation explainer for more information.
If we do not identify a violation of our policies, and we are able to locate the reported content and the concern alleged is sufficiently clear, we will then assess whether the content is illegal under UK law or meets the relevant threshold for content harmful to children under the Online Safety Act.
We will acknowledge receipt of your notice and inform you of our decision.
If you wish to make a complaint about Snapchat’s compliance with the Online Safety Act, you may do so via this form.
I want to report non-consensual intimate imagery, based on a law in my jurisdiction
Some jurisdictions have laws that require Snap to provide a way to report non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII) (e.g., Texas Senate Bill 441 and Florida House Bill 1161). You can make such a report and thus request removal of specific NCII content on Snapchat by:
- Clicking here;
- Selecting “They’re actually sharing my nudes/intimate imagery without my permission” under “Report the violation”;
- Filling out the required fields; and
- Clicking on the “Submit” button.
When possible, such content should also be reported in the Snapchat app by pressing and holding on the content, and tapping ‘Report’ or ‘Report Snap.’ This is the quickest and most efficient way to let us know about content that you think is problematic. From there, you can follow the in-app instructions to complete the report. We highly recommend reporting content through the in-app reporting flow, in addition to using the process described above, because it will help us identify the exact piece(s) of content you intend to report, and therefore allow us to provide a better response.
Once a report is submitted, you’ll receive a message from us acknowledging receipt. Our safety teams will (1) review the report to determine whether the reported content violates our Terms of Service or Community Guidelines, including our policy on non-consensual sexual material, and (2) take appropriate action, as explained here. Once we’ve completed our review, we’ll send you an email and/or message in-app to let you know about the outcome of your report. In addition, the status of a report submitted in-app may be tracked through My Reports.
